Summer brings beach trips, pool days, and the chance to finally wear your favorite sandals. While you might focus on packing the perfect beach bag, you cannot overlook the foundation of your summer adventures: your feet.
Warmer temperatures and open-toed shoes create unique challenges for foot health. From painful sunburns to stubborn fungal infections, your feet need extra care during the hotter months. By following a few simple steps, you can keep your feet looking great and feeling healthy all season long.
Shield Your Soles from the Sun
When applying sunscreen, most people cover their face, arms, and legs. However, they completely forget their feet. The tops of your feet and your toes face direct sunlight when you wear sandals or walk barefoot.
“Many people apply sunscreen everywhere but their feet,” says Dr. Bradley Herbst, Podiatrist at Podiatry Associates of Florida, San Jose Boulevard Division. “The skin on your feet is highly susceptible to sunburn and melanoma. Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to the tops of your feet and toes is absolutely essential.” Dr. Herbst includes most dermatologists will even inspect between toes and under toe nails for skin cancers.
Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you spend time swimming or sweating at the beach.
Fend Off Foot Fungus
Warm, damp environments act as a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus. Public pools, gym locker rooms, and shared showers pose a significant risk for conditions like athlete’s foot and fungal nail infections.
Protect yourself by always wearing water shoes or protective sandals in public wet areas. Never share towels or footwear with others. If your feet get sweaty inside your shoes, change your socks promptly and allow your shoes to dry completely before wearing them again. Keeping your feet clean and dry remains your best defense against fungal infections.
Cure and Prevent Cracked Heels
Open-backed shoes and sandals expose your heels to the elements. This constant exposure causes the skin to dry out, thicken, and eventually crack.
“Deep heel fissures are not just a cosmetic issue; they can become painful and infected,” warns Dr. Herbst. “A daily routine of using a thick moisturizing cream, works wonders to keep your heels smooth and intact.”
Apply a heavy heel balm right before bed and slip on a pair of cotton socks to lock in the moisture overnight.
Choose the Right Summer Footwear
While flimsy flip-flops might seem convenient for the beach, they offer zero arch support or heel cushioning. Wearing flat, unsupportive shoes all day can lead to heel pain, plantar fasciitis, and tendonitis.
Opt for summer footwear that provides structure. Look for sandals with a contoured footbed, a deep heel cup, and sturdy straps that keep your foot securely in place. Save the basic flip-flops strictly for the short walk from your car to the sand.
Step Into Summer with Confidence
Taking a proactive approach to your foot health ensures you can enjoy all your favorite summer activities without pain or discomfort. If you notice any persistent issues like severe cracking, suspicious moles, or signs of a fungal infection, do not wait for the problem to worsen.
